Codabar refers to alphanumeric linear barcode symbology used for encoding 16 different characters, plus extra 4 start/stop characters. It was created in 1972 by Pitney Bowes Corp. Codabar optionally contains checksum characters therefore named as self checking symbology.
Codabar is also known as Codeabar, Ames Code, NW-7 (Japanese name), Monarch, Code 2 of 7, Rationalized Codabar, ANSI/AIM BC3-1995 orUSD-4.

The four alphabets are used only as start/stop character, not included in the encoded message.
Structure of Codabar symbology

In the structure of Codabar symbology, each codabar character is shown using seven parts – Four bars and three spaces. Out of these seven parts – either two or three characters are wide and the remaining represent as narrow.
An inter-character space is also included to separate each barcode character from the next but is not actually a part of barcode character.
