Structure of Intelligent Mail barcode symbology

Intelligent mail can encode tracking number containing 20 digits with a routing number or delivery point zip code that may composed of 0 to 11 digits in length.
Tracking Code contains following sections:
- Barcode Identifier includes 2 digits assigned by USPS.
- Service Type Identifier 3 is composed of 3 digits also assigned by USPS.
- Mailer Identifier contains 6 or 9 digits in length depending on the serial number.
- Serial Number consists of 6 digits if used with 9 digits Mailer ID and 9 digits when used with 6 digits Mailer ID.
The routing number or delivery point zip code assigned by the mailer for mail segment routing. Mailer can leave the routing number empty or set to 5, 9 or 11 digits.
